The Divine Prerequisite
If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.
John 7:17
The one essential prerequisite to knowing God's will is for our will to be in line with His even before we know what His will is. Suppose a closed door has a sign on it that says, "On the other side of this door is God's will for your life." We wonder, What is it!? But why are we asking? So we can decide whether we want to go through the door or not?
If we want to fulfill our calling in Christ, we have to decide something on this side of the door. If God is God, then He has the right to decide what's on the other side of the door for us. And if we don't give Him that right, then we're acting as our own god. By faith we step through that door believing that God's will "is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2).
There is no better place to be than in the center of God's will, no matter where it takes us. progress is stalled if we stick our foot in the door, keeping it open in case we want to go back. Jesus said, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
