Christian Risk

Health, home, and auto insurance. Warranties and refunds. Licensing and bonding. Ratings and reviews. Americans live in the midst of a society that seeks to avoid and minimize risk. People who are risk takers seem out of place among us and may be referred to as “crazy,” “stupid,” or “adrenaline junkies.”  Yet, when the reward seems great enough… we may begin to consider taking risks we might not otherwise take.

Are Christians called to take risks? Ebola, Zika, ISIS, criminal activity, governmental imprisonments, and terrorist attacks are all fears that may keep us from going into places that are overflowing with people desperate to hear the Gospel message. Over 2 billion people have never heard the name of Jesus, but are likely to have heard of American movies, celebrities, sports figures, and fast food chains.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

God reminds us that the only hope of salvation lies in the name and sacrifice of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12, John 14:6, Romans 10:13-15). What a great reward and free gift we have in salvation through Jesus Christ… but are we willing to share Him? Even if it means risking our comfort, health, finances, or lives? No matter the cost, the most loving thing we can do for others is share the Good News about how Jesus loved us so much that He laid down His life on the cross on our behalf.

You are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:14

Are you a friend of Jesus? His servant? His child? If so, you will listen and obey Him. He is calling you today to pray a dangerous prayer of obedience today. Ask Jesus to change your heart to…

  • GIVE sacrificially, lovingly, and joyfully to His purposes in missions (2 Corinthians 6:9-15, Mark 12:30-31)

  • GO wherever and whenever He tells you (Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8)

  • SHARE the Good News with a stranger, foreigner, friend, family member, coworker, or neighbor (1 Peter 3:14-17).

Don’t deny Jesus with your “safe” silence or stillness.  Take a “risk” and move and speak (Matthew 10:32-33).
